CHAPTER FIFTEEN

V E R O N I C A

I didn’t know what I thought the ride to Virginia to visit Owen’s family would be like, but I wasn’t prepared to be stuck in his truck with Nattie and Adrien arguing in the back seat while I held Gimli on my lap to prevent him from trying to climb out the window that Owen insisted we keep open because of Gimli’s claustrophobia.

We’d stopped at a rest stop a little while ago, and Owen had given us all a “tour” of the spot he’d found Gimli when he’d hitched a ride home with Taylor and Ransom back in the fall. Gimli actually seemed to remember the place, and I wondered if he’d simply gotten lost from his home nearby only to be “rescued” by Owen. Though I’d never suggest that possibility aloud because Owen would probably spend most of the day searching for Gimli’s owners to be sure he hadn’t taken the animal unethically.

Hoping to pretend I was anywhere but here, I turned up the music on my phone and changed my AirPod setting to cancel environmental noise. Why Nattie had insisted on bringing someone along to Virginia made absolutely no sense. And why she chose her pain-in-the-ass older brother, Adrien, made even less sense.

She’d claimed she would feel like a third wheel if it was just the three of us, and despite my arguing that she and Owen were a couple—technically speaking—she put up enough of a fight about it that I eventually agreed to a fourth person just so I didn’t have to hear her complain.

“Are we there yet?” Adrien whined. “I’ve had to pee ever since we left that gas station.”

Apparently my headphones didn’t cancel as much noise as they claimed because I could still hear the voices behind me.

“Why didn’t you pee at the rest stop?”

“I didn’t have to go then. I said I’ve had to pee since then.”

“We’ve got another forty-five minutes or so,” Owen told him. “But I can stop again if you want.”

“He can hold it,” I said. “It’s his fault he didn’t go when we stopped.”

“Just because it’s my fault doesn’t mean I have to go any less.”

“I’ll pull over.” Owen began to slow down and put on his turn signal.

“It’s not safe for him to get out on the side of the highway,” I argued. “He’ll need to hold it.”

“It’s dangerous for all of us if we don’t pull over. All I have to pee in is this empty Monster can. I don’t even have a bottle.” Adrien leaned forward and put his hand on Owen’s shoulder as he pleaded with him. “Bro, would you really let another dude stick his dick in a can?”

“You’re disgusting,” Nattie and I both said at almost the exact same time. At least we could agree on something.

“Dude, don’t stick it in the can,” Owen warned.

“Well, obviously not fully in,” Adrien said. “I’m not small. But the tip’s gotta match up with the opening, and that’s a risk I don’t wanna take.
